Ice hockey demonstrates a high risk of injury, with the overall incidence rates in the National Hockey League ranging from 5.93 to 15.6 injuries per 1000 athlete exposures, a high rate directly related to the level of physicality required for the sport. Match injury incidence across professional leagues ranges from 38 to 88.6 injuries per 1000 hours of exposure, compared to training incidence of only 0.4 to 2.6 injuries per 1000 hours, highlighting the dramatic risk increase during competition. Players skate in excess of 32-48 kilometers per hour with body checking being the most common injury mechanism. Research on professional ice hockey demonstrates injury rates of approximately 115-116 injuries per 1000 player-game hours, with the majority of injuries occurring during matches rather than practice sessions. In elite female ice hockey, approximately one in five players report experiencing a health problem at any given time during the season, with shoulder, head, and knee injuries being most prevalent.
